Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate
Under the federal No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your health care services are expected to cost if you do not have health insurance or choose not to use your insurance to pay for care.
A Good Faith Estimate provides an estimate of the charges you can expect for your therapy services before receiving care.
Your Rights Under the No Surprises Act
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate when you schedule services at least three business days in advance. You may also request an estimate before scheduling an appointment.
If you schedule services at least three business days in advance, you should receive your estimate within one business day. If you schedule at least ten business days in advance, you should receive it within three business days.
If you request a Good Faith Estimate without scheduling an appointment, you should receive it within three business days.
Your estimate will include the expected charges for your services. The total cost of therapy will depend on the services you receive and the number of sessions you attend.
A Good Faith Estimate is not a contract and does not obligate you to receive services.
If Your Bill Is Higher Than Your Estimate
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you may be eligible to dispute the charges through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.
You generally have 120 calendar days from the date of your initial bill to begin this process.
Requesting a dispute will not negatively affect the quality of care you receive.
For more information about your rights, visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) website.
